10 Procedures With the Highest Readmission Rates

Kidney transplants and ilestomies — openings made in your stomach wall for the removal of waste — had the highest 30-day readmission rates of any procedures performed in 2010, according to a statistical brief from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project, sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Ten procedures with the highest readmission rates in 2010, according to the brief, were:

1. Kidney transplant — 29.1 percent of patients were readmitted.
2. Ilestomy — 29.1 percent of patients were readmitted.
3. Procedures to create access for hemodialysis — 27. 4 percent of patients were readmitted.
4. Nephrotomy and nephrostomy — 24.0 of patients were readmitted.
5. Tracheostomy — 23.9 of patients were readmitted.
6. Amputation of leg or foot — 22.8 of patients were readmitted.
7. Bone marrow transplant — 22.5 of patients were readmitted.
8. Embolectomy and endarterectomy of lower limbs — 21.1 of patients were readmitted.
9. Peripheral vascular bypass — 20.7 of patients were readmitted.
10. Insertion, replacement or removal of extracranial ventricular shunt — 20.1 of patients were readmitted.
