The California Senate voted 24-5 to approve a new bill that would increase reporting and regulation of radiation overdoses in CT scans, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times.
The Food and Drug Administration issued a warning about overdoses of radiation in CT scans after such incidences were found in Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and other hospitals, according to the report. The new bill would require radiologists to record the level of radiation in scans as well as strengthen accreditation requirements of medical imaging equipment operators.
Opponents to the bill said regulation should be handled by the federal government, not the state. The bill now moves to the state Assembly for approval.
