Blood transfusions may be a risk factor for surgical site infections in female patients who undergo abdominal hysterectomies, according to a study published in Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology.
For their study, researchers conducted a retrospective analysis of patients who underwent abdominal hysterectomies in Colorado from August 2009-July 2010. They discovered blood transfusion in patients who experienced blood loss of less than 500 mL may pose as a significant risk factor for surgical site infections.
