Albany Medical Center in New York Opens Patient Safety Simulation Center

Albany (N.Y.) Medical Center has unveiled its new $8.8 million Patient Safety and Clinical Competency Center, which was designed to improve patient safety, according to a hospital news release.

The 12,000-square-foot center incorporates life-like, computerized mannequins and other virtual technologies; simulated hospital settings such as operating rooms and intensive care units; and trained actors to portray real medical conditions. In this environment, medical students, residents and other healthcare providers can receive hands-on training in a controlled environment before treating patients.

The simulation mannequins can be programmed to react to a number of medical situations and stimuli with life-like tears, sweat, blood and even fluctuations in blood pressure and pulse rates.
