3 Factors Supporting Memorial Hermann's High Reliability Journey

Three factors support Houston-based Memorial Hermann Health System's efforts to become a high reliability organization, according to a report in The Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety.

Memorial Hermann Health System began its journey to become a high reliability organization in 2006. The factors that support this journey include the following, according to the report:

1. Aligned organizational structure with transparent management systems and compressed reporting processes.

2. Robust Process Improvement with high-reliability interventions.

3. Cultural establishment, sustainment and evolution.

The health system has seen vast improvements in quality, such as an increase in hand hygiene compliance rates at its nine acute-care hospitals from 44 percent to 92 percent currently and reducing its average rate of central line-associated bloodstream infections and ventilator-associated pneumonia to "essentially zero," according to the report.
