The Leapfrog Group ranked states by the percentage of hospitals that received an "A" grade — the highest possible from The Leapfrog Group — for patient safety.

Here are 10 states with the largest percentage of hospitals rated "A" by The Leapfrog Group" and 10 states with smallest percentage.


Note: Maryland was not ranked because they are not required to publicly report their hospital safety data, according to The Leapfrog Group.

2. Massachusetts — 70 percent
3. Minnesota — 46 percent
4. Virginia — 44 percent
5. Illinois — 42 percent
6. New Jersey — 40 percent
7. Michigan — 40 percent
8. Colorado — 38 percent
9. Montana — 38 percent
10. Florida — 37 percent

States with smallest percentage of hospitals rated "A"

1. New Mexico — 7 percent
2. West Virginia — 8 percent
3. Oregon — 10 percent
