1 dead, 7 sick in Utah after traveling to Tijuana for surgery

One Utahn died and seven others were sickened after undergoing weight-loss surgery in Tijuana, Mexico, according to CBS affiliate KUTV.

Each patient tested positive for antibiotic-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria, according to the Utah Department of Health.

Seven of the eight patients, including the one who died, saw the same surgeon, Dr. Mario Almanza. Five of the patients said Weight Loss Agents, an online referral service, recommended Dr. Almanza to them.

Similar cases have occurred nationwide among people seeking healthcare in Mexico. The CDC is investigating the current bacteria outbreak, which was first announced in January.
