CDC names permanent director of HIV prevention agency

The CDC has appointed Robyn Neblett Fanfair, MD, as the permanent director of the Division of HIV Prevention, which falls under the National Center for HIV, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention, according to a Feb. 12 news release.

Dr. Neblett Fanfair has served as the acting director of the division since August 2022, but is now being named as the division's permanent leader. 

"The HIV Medicine Association is excited to congratulate Robyn Neblett Fanfair, MD, MPH, on her appointment as the permanent director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of HIV Prevention…" Allison Agwu, MD, chair of the HIV Medicine Association, said in a statement shared with Becker's. "Her leadership is welcome and urgently needed to address HIV-related health inequities by advancing the Ending the HIV Epidemic in the U.S. initiative and a national PrEP program."

Dr. Neblett Fanfair is also a board-certified internist and has supported emergency responses for Ebola, Zika, Hurricane Irma/Maria, and COVID-19. She joined the CDC as an epidemic intelligence service officer in 2010 for the agency's Division of Foodborne, Waterborne, and Environmental Diseases, Mycotic Diseases.
