New law requires Texas nursing homes to report details on communicable diseases

Under a new law signed by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, information about communicable diseases spreading inside long-term care facilities and nursing homes is no longer considered "protected health information," local ABC affiliate KVUE reported May 24.

Senate Bill 930, signed by Mr. Abbott May 24, requires the facilities to start reporting details about the spread of communicable diseases, such as COVID-19.

The law, authored by Sen. Judith Zaffirini, will make such information available to the public and will take effect Sept. 1.
