Diabetes and substance use disorder are among the top health conditions Americans across the U.S. are suffering from, according to a recent analysis by Blue Cross Blue Shield.
BCBS released its annual "BCBS Health Index," which provides a comprehensive analysis of Americans' health by quantifying how more than 200 conditions affect commercially insured individuals.
The index assigns defined populations a score between 0 and 1, where 1 represents optimal health and any number in between indicates the adverse effects of illness and disease on a person's health and quality of life.
Here are the top 10 health conditions and their influence on national health, listed as a percentage:
- Hypertension — 12.5 percent
- Major depression — 9 percent
- High cholesterol — 8.6 percent
- Coronary artery disease — 7 percent
- Type 2 diabetes — 5.5 percent
