In addition to raising money and awareness, the fourth annual Stroke Awareness 5K and health fair at Mercy Medical Center in Merced, Calif., on May 2, may have saved one man's life, according to a Merced Sun-Star report.
The event is held every year to honor Stroke Awareness Month by promoting physical activity and providing the community with education on stroke prevention and education. This year the event was held on May 2. Numerous tables and booths offered free medical screenings and information on health services at the health fair.
A hospital spokesman told the Merced Sun-Star that one attendee took a stroke risk assessment test because he was feeling unwell and was experiencing pain in his arm and the test revealed he was actually having a stroke at the time. The man admitted to the hospital immediately thereafter.
More than 400 people participated in the 5K event this year, raising roughly $10,000 for the hospital's stroke program. Mercy Medical Center was also celebrating its five-year anniversary this year at the health fair, having opened its doors to the community at its current location on May 2, 2010.
