Mercy Medical Center in Fort Smith, Ark., has committed up to $350,000 to help build and staff a local low-income clinic at the Riverview Hope Campus for homeless people, according to the Times Record.
The Riverview Hope Campus will provide comprehensive services for the Fort Smith homeless population in one centralized location.
The involvement with the Riverview Hope Campus project is just one of many ways Mercy tries to reach out to patients who have difficulties accessing healthcare services, according to a statement from president of the Mercy Clinic in Fort Smith, Cole Goodman, MD.
"The idea that we could pool our resources with other agencies and create one location to assist our homeless and low-income population lines up with our mission to help patients find care close to them," said Dr. Goodman.
With the Mercy commitment, the campus is within $800,000 of reaching its goal of $2.9 million for the project's first phase, which includes acquiring a building to accommodate 75 beds and on-site medical and mental health services.
Also included in the project's plans are a kennel, a worship center, classrooms, showers, counseling rooms and space for nonprofit organizations and other agencies, according to the report.
