Americans were less active in 2014, study shows

The percentage of Americans who report doing no physical activity or exercise other than their regular job in the last 30 days increased from 2013 to 2014, according to the United Health Foundation's 25th annual America's Health Rankings.

Despite many physicians prescribing physical activity for patients to improve their health, the percentage of inactivity increased to 23.5 percent in 2014 from 22.9 percent in 2013, according to the report.

Listed below are the states the reported the highest percentages of inactivity.

1. Mississippi — 35.2 percent (adults reporting no recent physical activity)

2. Tennessee — 33.6 percent

3. Arkansas — 31.5 percent

4. Oklahoma — 31.1 percent

5. West Virginia — 30.7 percent

 

The states that reported being most active are listed below:

1. Colorado — 16.2 percent (adults reporting no recent physical activity)

2. Oregon — 16.6 percent

3. California — 18.6 percent

4. Vermont — 18.8 percent

5. Washington — 19 percent
