Will the WHO set international standards for drug pricing transparency? Italy wants it to

As more countries work to reign in their healthcare spending, the Italian government is asking the decision-making body of the World Health Organization to set standards that drugmakers must meet for pricing transparency, according to STAT.

Italian Minister of Health Giulia Grillo is asking the World Health Assembly to adopt a resolution that would require drugmakers to disclose their research and development costs, production costs, and the prices charged for medicines and vaccines.

Specifically, the resolution would allow the WHO to collect and analyze clinical trial data, understand the patent system and establish a forum that all countries can access for information on drug prices.

In describing the move, Ms. Grillo said that "international action is required to improve transparency."
