The total number of layoffs in the pharmaceutical industry is up by 5.7 percent compared to this time last year, according to a report from Challenger Gray & Christmas, an executive outplacement firm.
As of November, there were 11,219 layoffs in the industry. At this time last year there were 10,618.
In November 2018, there were 483 layoffs, while in October 2019 there were 2,243.
Amgen cut hundreds of jobs in November, when it laid off a quarter of its staff at its Cambridge, Mass., facility and cut 172 jobs across the country.
Also in November, HealthPartners closed all of its retail pharmacies and laid off 100 pharmacists.
The FTC also cleared the way for Bristol-Myers Squibb to acquire Celgene, which could lead to more layoffs before the end of the year.
