A fire broke out Aug. 21 at a facility that makes and exports active pharmaceutical ingredients for the U.S. and other countries. There were 17 deaths and 33 injuries from the blaze, according to an Aug. 22 report from The Times of India.
About 380 employees work at the Escientia Advanced Sciences site, which also manufactures intermediate chemicals. A district leader told the news outlet a chemical reactor did not cause the fire; officials suspect it was an electricity-related fire.
The plant, which is on India's eastern coast in the Andhra Pradesh state, is one of several API facilities based in India that supply to the United States. It is unclear whether the event will cause domestic drug shortages.
