An Illinois drugmaker is voluntarily recalling lots of two medications for organ transplant rejection because bottles may contain empty bottles.
In a Dec. 23 statement, Astellas Pharma US said it has notified customers of one lot of Prograf and another lot of Astagraf XL. Prograf is prescribed to prevent rejections of kidney, heart, liver or lung transplants, while Astagraf XL is for kidney transplants.
Ingesting empty capsules could result in transplant rejection, which can be fatal for patients with life-sustaining organ transplants such as a heart. No adverse events have been reported, Astellas said.
