5 recent drug recalls

Drug recalls, whether voluntary or forced by the FDA, ensure patient safety.

Here are five in the last month:

1. Recalled drugs: Irbesartan and Irbesartan HCTZ Tablets, a blood pressure medication
Reason for recall: Detection of a trace amount of N-nitrosodiethylamine, a possible human carcinogen.
Date of recall: Jan. 18
Drugmaker: Prinston Pharmaceutical, doing business as Solco Healthcare

2. Recalled drug: Rhino 5k capsules, a natural male enhancement drug
Reason for recall: FDA found the drugs were tainted with sildenafil and tadalafil, which are approved drugs for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, but the presence of it in the tablets renders them unapproved drugs.
Date of recall: Jan. 8
Drugmaker: Happy Together Inc.

3. Recalled drug: Nitrofurantoin, an oral antibiotic used for the treatment and prevention of bladder infections
Reason for recall: The drug was found to be subpotent
Date of recall: Jan. 8
Drugmaker: Lupin Somerset

4. Recalled drug: Vecuronium bromide injection, a muscle relaxer used as part of general anesthesia
Reason for recall: Particulate matter, later identified as glass, was found in the product.
Date of recall: Jan. 5
Drugmaker: Sun Pharma

5. Recalled drug: Losartan potassium tablets, a treatment for hypertension
Reason for recall: Detection of N-nitrosodiethylamine, a probable human carcinogen
Date of recall: Jan. 3
Drugmaker: Torrent Pharmaceuticals
