Healthgrades recognized 832 hospitals with its 2024 Patient Safety Excellence Award and 2024 Outstanding Patient Experience Award.
Among hospitals, 444 received the patient safety award and 388 received the patient experience award. Only 79 hospitals received both awards — four hospitals fewer than last year.
Hospitals receiving the Patient Safety Excellence Award were in the top 10% of hospitals based on 13 patient safety indicators from MedPAR data. An analysis revealed patients treated at a recipient hospital were less likely to experience the following events:
- In-hospital fall resulting in hip fracture: 52%
- Collapsed lung due to a procedure or surgery in or around the chest: 56%
- Pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital: 67%
- Catheter-related bloodstream infections: 71%
For the 2024 Outstanding Patient Experience Award, Healthgrades compared Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey data from January 2022 to December 2022. The analysis showed three patient experience ratings that best predicted whether a patient would recommend the hospital to others:
- Physician communication
- Nurse communication
- Clear communication about care when discharged
