Wilkes-Barre (Pa.) General Hospital opened its new $53 million emergency department and heart and vascular institute tower yesterday in response to growing volumes, according to a Citizens' Voice report.
The capital project was the largest in the hospital's history. In 2011, Wilkes-Barre General Hospital had more than 57,000 ED visits, but the new ED will alleviate patient flow as it is twice the size of the old one.
There is a new "fast track" area with 10 treatment rooms to deal with the larger patient load, and advanced emergency equipment is expected to improve rapid assessments, according to the report.
Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems owns Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, and this project is part of CHS' $96 million investment commitment to the hospital.
