Researchers Utilize Data to Reduce ED Crowding

Researchers have developed a data analytics simulation platform that presents a model of emergency department flow. This model uses big data to simulate ED throughput, which facilities could potentially use to enhance ED capacity management, according to study results published in BMC Medical Informatics and Decision Making.

The simulation model uses data from nationally reported averages and average academic hospital-based ED performance metrics. Using the data, the simulation model assesses a number of patient flow outcomes for individual facilities, so providers can adjust and reallocate resources to expedite care for all patients and reduce ED crowding.

The simulation model is available online and can be applied to a variety of environments. "This can allow ED and hospital managers to formulate cost-effective, hospital-specific solutions to ED crowding," the researchers wrote.
