Program at Arizona's Banner Gateway Allows Students to Volunteer in Operating Room

Banner Gateway Medical Center in Gilbert, Ariz., has initiated a program that allows nursing school or pre-med students to volunteer in its operating room, according to an Arizona Republic report.

The report says volunteers go through interviews and a specific selection process to make sure they are right for the program. If selected, volunteers help with stocking, cleaning, moving equipment, transporting specimens and helping prepare the OR for a surgery.

Volunteers are not involved with direct patient care nor have access to patient information, the report said. However, all volunteers do complete a HIPAA privacy compliance program.
