How video games sharpened this surgeon's skills

One Altamonte Springs, Fla.-based AdventHealth surgeon said his early years of playing video games influenced his surgical skills.

"Video games have similar controls, user interfaces and objectives to minimally invasive operations and they help improve my surgical abilities," Ryan Day, MD, surgical oncologist and transplant surgeon at AdventHealth Orlando (Fla.), said in a Dec. 18 news release shared with Becker's

A Central Florida native, Dr. Day now uses advanced technologies to provide specialized surgical care in the same area he spent his childhood playing video games.

He recently used the DaVinci V robotic system, installed at AdventHealth Orlando in September, to perform a minimally invasive abdominal surgery alongside his colleague Thomas Chin, MD.

"Offering robotic surgery here means that patients don't have to leave their community," Dr. Day said. "It's fulfilling my dream to bring life-changing care to the community I love."
