Durham, N.C.-based Duke University Health System plans to establish a proton beam therapy center after receiving a $50 million gift from an anonymous donor.

The donation is the largest philanthropic gift the health system has received, according to a Dec. 11 news release from DukeHealth.

The $120 million proton beam facility is expected to open by 2029 and serve about 800 patients a year, the release said.
