The American Cancer Society has named Wayne Frederick, MD, as interim CEO of the organization and its advocacy affiliate, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network. The news comes one month after the organization announced its current CEO, Karen Knudsen, PhD, was planning her exit.
Dr. Frederick will begin serving in his new role Nov. 2 as the search for a permanent CEO continues, according to an Oct. 15 news release from the ACS.
A surgical oncologist, Dr. Frederick joined the ACS Board in 2022 and served as president of Washington, D.C.-based Howard University from 2014 to 2023.
Dr. Knudsen's last day as CEO will be Nov. 1, and she will serve as an executive strategic advisor until early 2025, the release said.
