Only four cancer hospitals have an unplanned readmission rate for cancer patients below the national average, according to CMS data.
CMS used complication measures to evaluate the quality of care of patients who underwent prostate cancer surgery and scored them on a scale of 0 to 100. The scores were based on the number of hospital visits for incontinence and/or erectile dysfunction patients had in the year before versus the year after cancer surgery. The scores were also based on the percentage of patients who received PCH-based outpatient chemotherapy treatment for all cancer types, except leukemia, who were admitted to the hospital or visited the emergency department for one of 10 conditions within 30 days after treatment.
CMS found that 20.8 was the national average of 30-day unplanned readmission for cancer patients.
