Birmingham-based University of Alabama received a $3.5 million grant to help diversify nurse educators, al.com reported July 3.
The university will work with historically Black colleges to provide tuition assistance to 80 nursing students who want to pursue masters or doctorate degrees. It will also expand partnerships that provide paid internships.
Susan Welch, EdD, RN, associate professor of nursing, secured the funding from the Labor Department in order to provide more opportunities for diversity in nurse education. She told al.com that about 10 percent of nursing educators in the state are from underrepresented communities.
