A group of agents from the FBI, IRS and the Office of the Inspector General raided the residence of a nursing home chain CEO, according to The Indianapolis Star.
James G. Burkhart is the CEO of Indianapolis-based American Senior Communities, one of the largest nursing home management companies in Indiana.
On Sept. 15, an FBI truck was seen parked in front of Mr. Burkhart's Carmel, Ind., home. Agents then raided the residence to gather evidence.
In addition, FBI investigators were seen at the south side headquarters of American Senior Communities, according to reports.
A reason behind the raid of Mr. Burkhart's home has not been revealed. A spokeswoman for the Office of the Inspector General said she could not provide details of the raid or what might have been seized. FBI spokeswoman Wendy Osborne offered a vague comment: "The FBI is conducting an investigation in the Carmel area, the nature of which can't be disclosed at this time."
Mr. Burkhart is also the chairman of the board of directors of the Indianapolis-based Indiana Health Care Association, which represents nursing homes in Indiana. "The Indiana Health Care Association just learned of the investigation this morning," the organization said in a statement. "We will continue to gather information as it becomes available."
In 2010, American Senior Communities agreed to pay over $376,000 in penalties to settle a complaint that it employed workers who were ineligible under federal rules for reasons including the loss of licenses and a criminal conviction. It is not clear whether the 2010 settlement and the recent raid are related.
