St. Joseph's Hospital in Elmira, N.Y., and Guthrie Healthcare System in Sayre, Pa., have called off plans for a possible merger that would have brought St. Joseph's into the Guthrie system, according to a report by the Star-Gazette.
Due to uncertainties regarding the economic climate and reimbursements, the hospitals have decided the timing is not right for a merger, according to the report.
The two organizations will continue to work collaboratively, and Guthrie physicians will continue to stay on staff at St. Joseph's, according to the report.
Guthrie and St. Joseph's first announced merger plans in 2006, but those plans were put on hold when New York's Commission on Health Care Facilities in the 21st Century, often referred to as the Berger Commission, ordered St. Joseph's to explore a joint operating agreement with Arnot Ogden Medical Center, also in Elmira.
St. Joseph's and Arnot Ogden failed to reach a partnership agreement, and, following, St. Joseph's and Guthrie resumed merger talks.
