Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) has asked HHS to overhaul a dual eligibles demonstration project, according to a Kaiser Health News report.
Sen. Rockerfeller said in a letter to HHS that CMS' Financial Alignment Initiative for Medicare-Medicaid enrollees should be halted so the agency can take the necessary time to develop a "well-designed and thoroughly evaluated care coordination model for dual eligibles that meets the standards outlined in the [Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act]."
Sen. Rockerfeller authored language in the 2010 healthcare law that created the Federal Coordinated Health Care Office, which is responsible for overseeing CMS' dual eligibles demonstration.
Twenty-six states have submitted demonstration proposals to CMS to integrate care for three million dual eligibles, exceeding CMS' initial target of one to two million, according to the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission.
MedPAC has expressed concerns that the scope of CMS' dual eligible demonstrations as proposed is too broad, and that only a few health plans would be able to meet the full range of services for the three million dual eligibles, according to the report.
