Republicans Back New Bill to Defund PPACA

Rep. Tom Graves (R-Ga.) has introduced a joint resolution that would defund and delay further implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act until 2015.

tom gravesThe Stability, Security and Fairness Resolution — endorsed by 43 House Republicans including Rep. Graves — satisfies conservative lawmakers' demands for a measure that would fund the federal government for the rest of fiscal year 2014 while defunding the healthcare reform law and stopping its provisions from having an effect until after Dec. 31, 2014.

Federal lawmakers are currently in the midst of a heated debate about the PPACA and funding the government. Congress must pass a funding measure by Oct. 1 to prevent a government shutdown. A vote on a proposed spending bill scheduled for this week was recently delayed due to Republican leaders' failure to gather enough support for the measure.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) put forth a plan that would involve sending the Senate a stopgap spending bill along with a separate resolution to defund the healthcare reform law that would amend the spending bill. However, conservative lawmakers have criticized the proposal, demanding that any spending bill include a provision to defund the PPACA.
