Poll Shows Public Favors Protecting Medicare From Cuts, Raising Premiums for Wealthy

Protecting Medicare and implementing online health insurance marketplaces were among Americans' top priorities in a recent poll conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation, Robert Woods Johnson Foundation and Harvard School of Public Health.

Although 65 percent of Americans responded that lawmakers should work to bring down the deficit quickly, cutting federal spending on Medicare was off the table for 58 percent of those polled, and 46 percent felt similarly about cuts to Medicaid. Alternatively, reductions to foreign aid and military operations in Afghanistan were supported by more than half of respondents.

Specific modifications to the Medicare funding model that found significant support to shrinking Medicare expenses included requiring drug companies to offer discounts to low-income Medicare beneficiaries supported by 85 percent of those polled, and forcing high-income beneficiaries to pay higher Medicare premiums backed by 59 percent of those polled.
