Pennsylvania State Sen. Jim Ferlo has introduced a bill that would reinstate certificate of need requirements for new healthcare facilities in the state, according to an Essential Public Radio report.
Pennsylvania did away with its previous certificate of need law in 1996.
Currently 36 states have a certificate of need law, which is intended to restrain healthcare facility costs and better coordinate planning of new construction and services.
Sen. Ferlo's proposed law calls on the Pennsylvania Department of Health to draft a health improvement plan that would pinpoint the needs of given communities. The health department would also be required to create a panel for the Certificate of Need review process. Additionally, healthcare provider would need authorization for any hospital spending greater than $2 million.
