Patient Records From Midwest Women's Healthcare Specialists Found Blowing in the Wind

Kansas City, Mo.-based Midwest Women's Healthcare Specialists, part of Research Medical Center, has experienced a data breach involving at least 70 patients' records being blown out of a trash dumpster and scattered down the street, according to a KSHB report.

On May 19, a man driving near Kansas City, Mo.-based Research Medical Center's campus saw many sheets of paper blowing in the breeze. After examining one of the documents, he discovered it was part of a patient's medical record. The man decided to find the source of the papers, which led him to the medical center where he discovered the medical records of many patients who were seen at Midwest Women's Healthcare Specialists were being tossed into a dumpster, according to the report.

The man collected 70 patients' records. The records contained patients' names, addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers and physician names, according to the report.

After being notified of the records blowing out of the open-top dumpster, security guards from Midwest Women's Healthcare Specialist searched through the dumpster and removed remaining medical records, according to the report.
