Oregon Patient Safety Commission Launches Program to Help Resolve Provider-Patient Conflicts

The Oregon Patient Safety Commission has launched a statewide program — the Early Discussion and Resolution Program — aimed at helping healthcare providers and patients and their families resolve conflicts in a confidential but effective manner, according to a Statesman Journal report.

The commission has begun accepting notices of adverse healthcare incidents, which prompts a confidential conversation between the provider and patient. Either party can initiate the process. The program encourages open communication and aims at lowering the risk of litigation.

Similar programs do exist in other parts of the country, but the program in Oregon is the only statewide and comprehensive program, according to the commission. The commission will also collect and publish data from the program, according to the report.
