Ohio Health System Offers Response to Healthcare Reform

Akron, Ohio-based Summa Health System has offered a response to the latest developments in the healthcare reform debate and the potential impact on the health system, according to a Summa new release.
In its response, the health system outlined the key concepts of Pres. Obama's proposed reform package. These concepts include:

•    Individuals who like their current coverage — whether through their employer, a government program or other source — would be able to keep their current coverage.
•    New regulations for insurance companies would require the elimination of pre-existing condition exclusions, a cap on out-of-pocket expenses and the elimination of cost-sharing for preventive care.
•    A new insurance exchange would allow small businesses and people without health insurance to compare plans and buy coverage at competitive prices.
•    Tax credits would be available to certain individuals and families that need assistance buying health insurance and to small businesses to cover their employees.
•    Individuals with pre-existing conditions could participate in a low-cost, "high-risk" pool to receive coverage.

Summa said that it supports the changes proposed by the President but is concerned with how the plan will be financed. According to the release, Summa is "concerned about how the proposed reductions in future Medicare payments may impact Summa," but says it "welcomes the President's enthusiastic support for efforts to test new payment models aimed at reforming the healthcare delivery system in ways that better emphasize quality of care over the quantity of services delivered."

Summa also supports efforts to examine malpractice reform.
