A group of 480 lawmakers representing every state is expected to file a brief today that asks the Supreme Court to uphold the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, according to a report from The Hill.
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral arguments on the healthcare reform law in March, and will likely issue its ruling this summer. The state legislators backing today's brief say the Constitution's Commerce Clause gives Congress broad authority to regulate interstate commerce, making the individual insurance mandate just.
"The idea that the federal government does not have the power to address a national problem such as the healthcare crisis has no basis in the Constitution's text and history," the brief reads, according to the report.
