Minnesota Expands Medicaid While Other States Seek Cuts

While many other states are asking for federal permission to cut Medicaid enrollment, Minnesota has received permission to expand its Medicaid rolls by 95,000 people on March 1, according to a report by the Hill.

The approval from HHS allows Minnesota to incorporate 83,000 people in two state-funded programs into Medicaid and add an estimated 12,000 more people to the Medicaid rolls.

Newly installed Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton signed an executive order approving the expansion, which his predecessor, former GOP Gov. Tim Pawlenty declined to do.

Connecticut and the District of Columbia have already expanded their Medicaid rolls, while Arizona recently received permission to cut its rolls by 250,000 people. However, Arizona's unusual circumstances may not apply to other states seeking to cut Medicaid enrollment. They face a prohibition against cuts in the healthcare reform law.
