Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., announced it is applying for a certificate of need for an approximately $33 million emergency department expansion.
The expansion will add 93,000 square feet and 16 patient treatment areas, bringing the total number of treatment areas to 54.
The expansion is designed to increase capacity to treat patients. In 2007, the ED had 46,500 patient visits, and in 2011, it had more than 56,000. The new ED will be able to accommodate 70,000 patient visits annually, according to the release.
