Medical Leaders Urge PMAs to Reduce Funding From Drug and Device Companies

A group of medical leaders have called upon professional medical associations to reduce and eliminate contributions from pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers, calling the practice "a threat to quality patient care and professional integrity," according to a news release from the Institute on Medicine as a Profession.

An article in the Apr. 1 edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association, written by past and present leaders of medical societies, lays out a series of 10 recommendations for PMAs to reduce their industry contributions to $0. The recommendations include establishing "conflict-free" leadership, not allowing "industry" officials to influence speakers at conferences and eliminating product endorsements, according to the release.

These recommendations come slightly more than three years after JAMA published a similar call to action related to industry conflict of interest for academic medical centers, according to the release.
