The health system intends to make these cuts in response to the state cutting $45 million in order to balance their budget and an anticipated loss of $95 million in state and federal money next year.
Cambridge Health Alliance operates Cambridge City Hospital, Somerville Memorial Hospital, the Whidden Hospital in Everett and 28 ambulatory health clinics.
In an effort to compensate for these financial set backs, these three hospitals may have to eliminate smaller units and programs, according to the Boston Business Journal report . One of the two 22-bed psychiatry units at the Whidden Hospital has already begun the process of closing and sporadic layoffs are occurring throughout the health system.
Although the Cambridge Health Alliance is working with state health officials to try to restore some of the money that was cut to balance the budget, a spokesman from the group stated that they may not be able to prevent a closure of one of the three hospitals, according to the story.
