In 2009, an estimated 1 billion visits were made to physician offices and 96 million visits to hospital outpatient department clinics for ambulatory care, according to recent statistics published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

However, 37 percent of patients' visits to outpatient departments were covered by private insurance, 19 percent by Medicare and 26 percent by Medicaid.
