The Institute of Medicine has released eight standards for developing evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, which can be used to standardize and optimize patient care, according to an IOM news release.
The study, requested by U.S. Congress, through the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008, identifies mechanisms to identify high quality, trustworthy clinical practice guidelines in hopes of improving clinical decision making, quality and outcomes.
The eight standards include:
1. Establishing transparency.
2. Management of conflict of interest.
3. Guideline development group composition.
4. Clinical practice guideline–systematic review intersection.
5. Establishing evidence foundations for and rating strength of recommendations.
6. Articulation of recommendations.
7. External review.
8. Updating.
