How Americans Feel About U.S. Healthcare: 12 Statistics

Most Americans are happy with how the U.S. healthcare system is working for them, according to a recent Gallup poll.

Sixty-six percent of those polled during the first half of June reported being satisfied with the system. Gallup has been asking people on a nightly basis since March 21 if they are dissatisfied or satisfied with the healthcare system. The seven-day rolling average on the measure peaked at 70 percent overall satisfaction in mid-April, in the immediate wake of the first open enrollment period for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act exchanges, according to Gallup.

Gallup has found satisfaction with the system is correlated with health insurance status: 71 percent of American adults with health insurance report being satisfied, compared with just 36 percent of the uninsured. However, 28 percent of those with insurance coverage are still dissatisfied.

Adults older than 65 also have a higher satisfaction rate (79 percent), while satisfaction ranges from 61 percent to 66 percent for those between the ages of 18 and 49. Furthermore, those with government coverage have higher satisfaction rates. Seventy-six percent of those with Medicare or Medicaid, and 77 percent with military or veterans insurance report being satisfied. Meanwhile, 70 percent of those with employer or union plans and 66 percent of people with self-paid health plans say they're satisfied with the healthcare system, according to the poll.

Although the question Gallup asked did not mention the PPACA, Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents report higher rates of satisfaction (75 percent) than Republicans and Republican leaners (61 percent).
