Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) and the rest of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee have sent a letter to the Internal Revenue Service, asking to see all communication between the IRS and the White House because they believe there could have been illegal implementation of the healthcare law, according to a report from The Hill.
Rep. Issa, chairman of the committee, believes the IRS is illegally applying the portion of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that would give subsidies to the poor to buy affordable healthcare. Under the PPACA, low-income earners could receive tax credits to help buy insurance through the insurance exchanges.
The IRS has denied any political pressure from the White House to implement the policy, and it has said the policy is legal within the framework of the law. However, Rep. Issa and other conservative lawmakers believe the IRS' defense is "flawed" because the subsidies should not be "the federal fallback," according to the report.
