New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu announced that construction will begin on a $130 million hospital in eastern New Orleans, according to a Times-Picayune/Associated Press report.
Landrieu told the Times-Picayune/Associated Press that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development agreed to insure a $97.6 million loan for the New Orleans East Hospital. Eastern New Orleans has been without a hospital since Hurricane Katrina.
