HHS, Obama Administration Celebrates National Nurses Week by Touting PPACA

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius kicked off National Nurses Week with a statement that both thanks nurses and commends the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act for creating job and educational opportunities for those care providers.

"By expanding investments in primary and preventive care programs in which nurses play a vital role, the Affordable Care Act strengthens the focus on keeping people healthy and managing chronic conditions," Sec. Sebelius said in the statement.

Sec. Sebelius points to an expansion of nurses employed at community health centers — 3,000 since the PPACA — and training and loan forgiveness made possible by an expansion of the National Health Services Corps — the PPACA allocates $1.5 billion to expand the NHSC over the next five years — as reasons for why the 2010federal healthcare law has helped the nursing profession.

Additionally, the health secretary touts CMS' four year, $200 million PPACA "demonstration," which partners certain hospitals with nursing schools and non-hospital community health centers in an effort to improve primary care.

The White House also released a report today defending its efforts to improve the nurse workforce.
