Healthcare Surpasses Other Industries in Projected Job Growth for 2010-2020

The healthcare and social assistance sector is projected to gain the most jobs and have rapid job growth from 2010 to 2020, according to a news release by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Healthcare and social assistance is estimated to gain 5.6 million jobs from 2010 to 2020. In addition, seven of the 20 industries set to gain the most jobs are in the healthcare and social assistance sector.

Other data points include the following:

•    One-third of the projected fastest-growing occupations are related to healthcare.
•    Employment in healthcare support occupations is expected to grow 34.5 percent — the fastest of the 22 major occupational groups.
•    Healthcare practitioners and technical occupations are expected to grow 25.9 percent.
•    Of the 30 detailed occupations expected to have the biggest growth, registered nurses are expected to see the most job growth at 712,000 jobs.
