GE Healthcare Announces FDA Clearance of Liver Imaging Tool

During the 98th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America in Chicago from Nov. 25 to 30, GE Healthcare announced the receipt of U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance for an advanced imaging tool, which was developed to simplify intricate liver embolization procedures.

FlightPlan for Liver helps interventionalists plan their liver embolization procedures — a standard palliative treatment for liver cancer aimed at blocking blood supply to the liver tumor. According to the release, physicians only need to select the tip of the catheter and hypervascular tumor on a 3D image, and the software highlights the vessels traveling from the catheter to the lesion. The highlighted vessels can then be used as a 3D roadmap and superimposed on a live fluoroscopic image to help the physician guide the catheter into the target artery.

According to the release, FlightPlan for Liver has the potential to extend the technique to practitioners, as it helps improve the confidence in performing the difficult procedure.
