Enrollment in managed Medicaid plans is on the rise across the U.S. as states look to rein in costs for the program, according to an analysis of data from CMS and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners by Mark Farrah Associates, a leading publisher of health plan market data.
Enrollment in Medicaid managed plans grew 11 percent from June 2008 to June 2009, reaching more than 33.6 million, or roughly 70 percent of total Medicaid enrollment. Estimates for 2010 show managed Medicaid enrollment up an additional 5 percent to 35 million.
The economic decline has led to increased Medicaid enrollments, and many states have selected managed care strategies to help rein in Medicaid costs.
UnitedHealth, the largest commercial insurer in the managed Medicaid market, increased its enrollment in subsidized plans by 30 percent between June 2009 and June 2010, according to MFA's analysis.
